| Emma Roberts' career moves at a non-stop pace
She may star in a TV show called "Unfabulous," but actress Emma Roberts appears to have a most smashing career. With the popular Nickelodeon show, the hit film "Aquamarine" (now out on DVD) and the title role in an upcoming "Nancy Drew" movie _ well, there's a reason why Roberts doesn't need to ask her famous aunt Julia for job advice (Dad, by the way, is actor Eric Roberts). We chatted recently with Roberts about the importance of follow-through, Harry Potter and those celebrity family ties. Q: Where are you calling from? A: I'm in New York, (promoting) the Band-Aid brand "Stick With It" contest _ it's a contest that inspires kids to stick with it, whether that be academics or sports or instruments or hobby. Amelia up with the best
At just eight years old, Amelia James has been singing for just under a year but she has already proved she is up there with the best after making it through to the finals of the Northlands Mall talent quest. The Tinwald School pupil was also invited to perform as a guest artist at the Richmond Kiwi Club the following day. Amelia began singing after taking guitar lessons through Tinwald School. Her guitar tutors encouraged her parents to take her to singing lessons after they heard her sing during guitar lessons. In week one of the talent quest she and fellow Ashburtonian Kim Willis both made it into the semifinals of the junior competition and the following week Amelia made the top eight finalists. For the competition Amelia performed The River a song she has been learning for about six months under the tutelage of Fiona Glassey.
Hanauer slows down
Life, these days, is peaceful for Chip Hanauer. Slower, too. Removed from the fast-paced world of unlimited hydroplane racing in which he had enormous success, including a record 11 Gold Cup victories, six of which came on the Detroit River, Hanauer today spends his time learning to play classical guitar, tackling a bit of two-man sailing and driving around Seattle with his dog, Bella, in an unglamorous 1991 Buick station wagon with faux wood paneling, some of it peeling. Hanauer, 52, was always considered during his career a cerebral guy who happened to be one of the most dominant boat racers in history. Now, he is a cerebral ex-racer with hard-earned perspective that he shares during corporate motivational speaking engagements. He retired from racing in 2000, but Hanauer is making a rare return to the Detroit River this weekend as part of the Gold Cup festivities.
