Powers discovers power of the pen

An aspiring writer, Elizabeth Powers, 14, graduated this year from Kickemuit Middle School and has a lot to show for it, including her own literary magazine. Miss Powers was one of 23 students chosen to be in the SOS (Success Oriented Students) program — an eighth-grade project modeled after the Mt. Hope High School senior project.

Miss Powers decided to make a literary magazine called 'Whatever,' a 76-page booklet that she edited and put together with fiction, poetry and editorials, many of which she wrote. Miss Powers will attend Mt. Hope High School in the fall and hopes to continue her literary magazine online.

How did you get the idea? "I went to the library to research and found a book called 'Careers for Writers' and saw the magazine. I was originally going to write a short story, but I didn't think that was original.

Councilors approve city budget

At Monday's council meeting Mayor Ravi Bhasker said Finance Director Mable Gonzales told him city revenues wouldn't be as strong in the coming year. However, the budget committee made allotments using the figure from a few years ago, so the revenue estimate is conservative.

"We're not going to try to do anything huge, but just keep progressing through it," he said.

According to the resolution, the budget includes a 2.5 percent cost-of-living pay raise for all city employees, a salary adjustment for administrative personnel and a one-time salary adjustment for all city workers during the first week in December. The one-time adjustment is equivalent to a 4 percent overall salary increase.

Capital projects the budget funds include work on the landfill, swimming pool, tennis courts and Plaza landscaping.

Viveik learnt to strum guitar for 'Omkara'

By Arpana, Mumbai: Actor Viveik Oberoi is back again with his perfectionist zeal in his ready-to-release "Omkara", an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello", for which he learnt to play the guitar.Directed by Vishal's Bharadwaj, "Omkara" is set against the rustic backdrop of western Uttar Pradesh and Viveik essays Casio's character who is called Kesu Phirangi. In the film, there is a sequence where Viveik's character strums the guitar and the actor wanted to get under the skin of character thoroughly and started taking guitar lessons. His musician friend used to travel all the way to Wai, near Mahabaleshwar, to teach him to play the stringed instrument."Viveik is a very dedicated actor. He started learning to play the guitar only to get into character for the sequence in the film. He has done a fabulous job in 'Omkara'," said Bharadwaj who is quite impressed with Viveik's sincerity towards his work. This reminds one of how Viveik perfected his character in Ram Gopal Varma's "Company".

He won't start his second year of college for more than a month, but Grant Leslie is getting a jump on things: He's returning to Warrensburg this week to find a part-time job, hoping to beat the crowd.

Leslie, 19, is studying elementary education at Central Missouri State University. He has experience teaching third-graders at Bible school. "That's the age right before they become ornery, when they're still cute," he says.

He has been active in church, especially through music. He plays piano and keyboards with an adult praise band on Sundays, and he leads music and plays guitar for the youth group. He also plays piano for weddings and funerals.

He works as a tour guide at the Jesse James Farm and Museum in Kearney. He grew up in Holt and graduated from Kearney High.
