Sneakin' Out For A New Sound

Of course, the correct answer is "d". This weekend Oregon fans have a bumper crop of concerts to choose from, with shows to suit every taste. Of course, if you'd like to cover all the bases at once, you could just go see Portland's acoustic trio, Sneakin' Out. April Baer has this profile.

Before we go any further, one word of warning: dropping in on a Sneakin' Out show, it's best to be ready for anything. You might hear one of the band's signature covers of rock classics.

But if the Stones aren't your style, just wait a few minutes. Something unpredictable is bound to crop up.

(fade up Beethoven digression in "Paint it, Black")

What is this? The classics? Or classic rock? Sneakin' Out's motto might as well be "Refuse to Choose."

This trio -- Dave Gerow on mandolin, percussionist Don Henson, and "Cheddar" Mike Schmitt on bass -- clearly enjoys keeping audiences on their toes, musically and visually.

DRAGONFORCE Guitarist: 'Our Musical Influences Actually Come From ...

Brian O'Neill of UWeekly.com recently conducted an interview with DRAGONFORCE guitarist Herman Li. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

U Weekly: Herman, enquiring minds want to know... Dude, how do you shred so hard?

Herman: "(Laughter) I don't know! That's one of those hard to answer questions. We just play what we think sounds cool and if people think that's cool then we have something in common."

U Weekly: It does surprise many that you never took any formal lessons in your life...

Herman: "No, I pretty much learned from watching videos and listening to music, things like that. I never had any guitar lessons or anything like that. I just played and tried different things and work it out and see what works and what doesn't. I can't read music either.

Viveik learnt to strum guitar for 'Omkara'

By Arpana, Mumbai: Actor Viveik Oberoi is back again with his perfectionist zeal in his ready-to-release "Omkara", an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello", for which he learnt to play the guitar.Directed by Vishal's Bharadwaj, "Omkara" is set against the rustic backdrop of western Uttar Pradesh and Viveik essays Casio's character who is called Kesu Phirangi. In the film, there is a sequence where Viveik's character strums the guitar and the actor wanted to get under the skin of character thoroughly and started taking guitar lessons. His musician friend used to travel all the way to Wai, near Mahabaleshwar, to teach him to play the stringed instrument."Viveik is a very dedicated actor. He started learning to play the guitar only to get into character for the sequence in the film. He has done a fabulous job in 'Omkara'," said Bharadwaj who is quite impressed with Viveik's sincerity towards his work. This reminds one of how Viveik perfected his character in Ram Gopal Varma's "Company".
