| Hanauer slows down
Life, these days, is peaceful for Chip Hanauer. Slower, too. Removed from the fast-paced world of unlimited hydroplane racing in which he had enormous success, including a record 11 Gold Cup victories, six of which came on the Detroit River, Hanauer today spends his time learning to play classical guitar, tackling a bit of two-man sailing and driving around Seattle with his dog, Bella, in an unglamorous 1991 Buick station wagon with faux wood paneling, some of it peeling. Hanauer, 52, was always considered during his career a cerebral guy who happened to be one of the most dominant boat racers in history. Now, he is a cerebral ex-racer with hard-earned perspective that he shares during corporate motivational speaking engagements. He retired from racing in 2000, but Hanauer is making a rare return to the Detroit River this weekend as part of the Gold Cup festivities.
Teen on road to music stardom
NEW MARKET -- "I'm gonna do it, darling. I could waste my time trying to figure out, but I'm jumpin' in anyhow," sings Jessica Simms, performing Radney Foster's tune "A Real Fine Place to Start." After Jessica's CD entry was selected as one of eight finalists of the Colgate Country Showdown, the biggest country music talent search in the country, she performed June 30 in its local competition. With most contestants in their twenties, Jessica, 13, was the youngest participant. But intimidated? "I don't get nervous," she said. She started taking singing lessons when she was 7 and competed in two contests -- Rising Star and Headliners -- a year later, taking first place in both. She spent the next five years practicing, without competing at all. "I wanted to get better," she said.

Sigur sounds
In case you missed the version on Takk . . ., they've reproduced it here and tacked on an intro that sounds like a cross between crickets and a wind-up doll. The opening melodic lines played on piano and bells build to an anthemic OK Computer-era-Radiohead climax, then fade to a slow and sugary outro. Sigur Rós, “Refur (Sæglópur)" More tone poem than song, this brief but elegant track is built on a haunting piano lick that vamps over a humming bass. Sigur Rós, “Ó Fridur (Sæglópur)" Ignore Jónsi Birgisson's plaintive falsetto that enters around the three-minute mark and the piano, flute, and orchestral flourishes on this track sound like something from the next Sufjan album. Sigur Rós, “Kafari" (Sæglópur)" Clanging chimes and children's bells give the impression of water droplets as they float above quivering accordion swells that fade into nothing.
Former WASP Axeman Offering One-On-One Guitar Lessons - June 24 ...
So here's the deal… Recently I have been contacted several times by people interested in receiving guitar lessons from me. I am considering accepting a few select students for private one-on-one lessons. This would be an outcall situation (meaning I would come to your home, work, etc.). You must live in the Los Angeles area and be serious about learning guitar. Contact me here or email: darrellicks2000@yahoo.com." As previously reported, Roberts — who joined W.A.S.P. in 2001 before the "Unholy Terror" American tour to replace Chris Holmes — is in the process of putting together a four-piece group that he will be fronting. "I am looking for a drummer and second guitarist (that can sing)!" Darrell wrote in an April 19, 2006 posting at his MySpace profile. "I want to work with people that live in the Los Angeles area or are open to the idea of relocating here.
